LANGKAWI – The Menteri Besar of Kedah today warned the people to be wary of so-called promises by certain quarters in their bid to wrest the state from Barisan Nasional (BN).
Datuk Seri Ahmad Basha Md Hanipah cited new parties such as Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia which had been making many promises claiming they were better and more able to bring development to the people.
“We have a government and a great leader; BN has brought many changes,” he said at the launch by Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak of the National Grade System rural electrification project at Pulau Tuba here today.
He said the people should appreciate the Prime Minister’s recognition of Kedah as the ‘heart’ of UMNO, “which is not a light responsibility to carry”.
“As the heart of UMNO, we must look ahead; the BN government always fulfills its promises and we have been highly acknowledged by the prime minister who had made sure that the whole of Kedah progresses.
“It is our duty as the people of Kedah to repay that kindness and show our gratitude,” said the MB. – BERNAMA
SUNGAI PETANI – The Kedah state government will take drastic measures to clean up areas known to have various social problems, including drugs, especially at the Paya Nahu People’s Housing Scheme, near here.
Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said the main focus would be to wipe out the drug menace, illegal electricity and water connections.
“We will conduct a check and review the list of owners since there are houses that are empty and there are houses where tenants are staying illegally. We will work closely with Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Syarikat Air Darul Aman to overcome the problem of illegal connections,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters here today after visiting a four-year-old girl who was hospitalised at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital after being brutally abused by her mother’s boyfriend at the People’s Housing Project in Paya Nahu Flat 2.
Ahmad Bashah also visited the Paya Nahu flats where police discovered the decomposing body of the abused girl’s two-year-old brother, who was wrapped in a blanket and stuffed inside a cooler box at a three-bedroom flat unit where the 34-year-old boyfriend of the siblings’ mother lived.
The body was discovered after police checked on the house following a domestic quarrel complaint.
It was reported that initial investigations showed that the boy had died on Nov 9 and both the 26-year-old mother and her boyfriend were remanded for seven days for further investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code. – BERNAMA

ALOR SETAR – The statement by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin claiming that Barisan Nasional (BN) will fall in Kedah in the coming general election is merely wishful thinking or ‘angan-angan Mat Jenin’.
Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said the statement was merely aimed at wooing the people’s support for the leadership of the new party in general.
“That is his (Muhyiddin’s) political game…but he does not realise that he himself will lose,” he said after officiating the Online Networking Entrepreneurs (ONE) Carnival organised by the Companies Commission of Malaysia, here today.
In a statement to a local newspaper, Muhyiddin claimed that the Kedah BN would fall in the coming general election because of the public sentiment after the Kedah menteri besar was replaced early this year.
He claimed that after Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir relinquished the post of Kedah Menteri Besar, BN must be toppled as the people purportedly perceived Ahmad Bashah as not having the calibre of Mukhriz.
The UMNO state liaison chairman said the people in the state were wise in choosing the party to lead the government and did not want to be cheated twice after being ruled by the opposition in the 12th general election previously.
He pointed out that UMNO and BN were not afraid of the statement and instead continued to work hard to ensure that the party machinery was ready to face the poll besides having a secret weapon to be used during the campaign later.
“They (PPBM) can say what they like…because I’m confident the people of Kedah are smart in making an evaluation as they do not want to suffer again. I’m confident the people will defend UMNO and the BN to continue to rule the state,” he added. – BERNAMA
