ALOR STAR: The Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, passed away today.
He was 89.
He passed away at the Istana Anak Bukit at 2.30pm.
An official announcement is expected to be made at 6pm.
Born on Nov 28, 1927, Sultan Abdul Halim ascended to the Kedah throne in 1958. He was the second, but the eldest surviving son of Almarhum Sultan Badlishah.
Sultan Abdul Halim received his education at Sekolah Alor Merah, Sekolah Melayu Alor Gajah and Sultan Abdul Halim College from 1946 until 1948.
Sultan Abdul Halim was the only Sultan to have become the Yang Di-pertuan Agong twice. He first became the Yang Di-pertuan Agong on Sept 21, 1965 until Sept 20, 1970 and was again the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in Oct 2011.
Sultan Abdul Halim married Sultanah Bahiyah Tuanku Abdul Rahman in 1956 and have three daughters, Tunku Soraya Sultan Abdul Halim, Tunku Sarina Sultan Abdul Halim and Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Sultan Abdul Halim.
Sultanah Bahiyah passed away at Istana Anak Bukit in 2003. In 1975, Sultan Abdul Halim married Sultanah Haminah from Perak.-NST ONLINE
