IPOH – The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah today criticised private housing developers who are inclined to reaping huge profits by building luxury homes instead of more affordable houses for the people.

The sultan said developers should be equally responsible in providing housing, especially for the low-income group, and not just leave the task to the government and its agencies.

He noted that the price of houses in Malaysia had risen by more than 100 per cent in the last 14 years.

“Based on data from the National Housing Department, the increase between year 2000 and 2014 was 109.6 per cent. This was not in line with the salary rise in Malaysia (during the period) which was at an average annual rate of 2.6 per cent.”

Sultan Nazrin said this in his speech at the opening of the first meeting, fourth session of the 13th Perak State Legislative Assembly, at Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan, here, today.

The sultan said that in Perak, 72.8 per cent of the households in 2014 earned a salary of less than RM5,000 per month.

He said realisig the need for housing, especially among the low-income group, the state government had taken measures to build more affordable homes.

“For this purpose, the Perak Housing and Real Property Board will be set up to, among others, oversee real property development and public housing projects, besides building more affordable homes.

“These measures are apt, commendable and prove the seriousness of the Perak state government in assisting the low-income group improve their lot,” Sultan Nazrin said. – BERNAMA
