KUCHING – Sarawak Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom is confident the venue for the 2016 Malaysia Games (2016 Sukma) will be ready much earlier before the meet starts.
He said, apart from the competition venues and existing facilities that were being given a facelift, the new RM163-million aquatic complex was now 70 per cent completed and expected to be fully completed by October.
“The Sarawak Stadium, built in 1997 for the Youth World Cup championship, is being restored and will be completed by February next year as the venue for the 2016 Sukma opening and closing events,” he told reporters after inspecting the progress of the aquatic centre construction in Petra Jaya here today.
Other amenities being built for the 2016 Sukma are a hockey field and a gymnastic centre at the State Stadium in Petra Jaya besides a badminton and volleyball stadium in Sibu and a karate-do centre in Miri.
On the state’s preparation, Mawan said as the 2016 host, Sarawak aimed to be the champion after last holding the title 20 years ago and would compete in 24 sports events. – BERNAMA
