KUALA LUMPUR – The gold medal won by 2014 Perlis Sukma, sportswoman Jenilie Empera (pic, right) in the women’s weightlifting not exceeding 75kg has been revoked after she was found to have taken steroids.
In making the announcement, Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the decision to withdraw the medal was made after a test on the second blood sample taken from the athlete found steroids.
He said, sample A and B which were found to be positive were each tested in July and August in India as Malaysia did not have an accredited laboratory to carry out doping tests on national athletes.
“She protested on the result when sample A was found positive.
“We conducted a test on sample B after she protested and it was found that the sample was found to contain a banned substance, steroids,” he said.
He said this to Bernama after becoming a guest in the programme ‘Dalam Radar’ produced by Bernama Radio 24 and hosted by Zulkifli Bujang and Shuhada Armawan. – Bernama
