KUALA LUMPUR – A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale was reported at Vanuatu Island at 4.09 am today.
The Malaysian Meteorology Department, in a statement, said the epicentre of the quake was at 881 kilometres southwest of Nadi, Fiji, and 6,102 kilometres southeast of Semporna, Sabah.
The quake, however, did not pose a tsunami threat.
In another statement, the department reported a strong earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale at 6.13 am today in the east region of New Guinea, with its epicentre at 3,442 km southeast of Semporna, Sabah.
The quake also did not pose a tsunami threat. – BERNAMA
