KANGAR – A severe storm damaged more than 70 houses and nearly 30 Ramadan bazaar stalls in several areas in the state Friday.
However, no one was injured in the incident which occurred at 3.30 pm, said Perlis state executive councillor, Rela Ahmad.
Rela, who is chairman of the State Women’s Development, Social Welfare and Community Unity Committee, said the worst-affected area was Taman Datuk Jaafar where the whole roof or parts of the roof were blown off 26 houses and several stalls were damaged.
The other affected areas are Kampung Wang Ulu; Padang Lima Nalih and Taman Bukit Kayangan, all of which are in the Bintong state constituency which Rela represents.
Two houses, one in Wang Ulu and the other in Padang Lima Nalih, were damaged by uprooted trees, she said.
The damaged Ramadan bazaar stalls were located in front of the State Legislative Assembly complex in Seriab; Jalan Hospital and in front of Taman Datuk Jaafar, and the traders had to close for business, she said.
Rela visited the affected areas in the evening and night and is scheduled to make another visit Saturday.
She said the state social welfare department was assessing the damage caused by the storm.
“The department will provide aid according to the damage suffered by the people, at least to enable them tide over the coming Aidilfitri,” she told BERNAMA. – BERNAMA
