DATUK Seri Najib Tun Razak has directed Umno to start preparing for the 14th general election, saying that they must work hard to improve sentiments towards the party.
“We must start preparing from now. Our people have done their checks and found that sentiments are still lukewarm in our favour,†he said.
The Umno president told the party to double its efforts to register new voters as Umno’s public ratings had seen a slight decline.
However, the recent wins by pro-establishment student candidates in campus elections, he said, were a heartening sign.
“Our party must have the right strategy, the right communication and our bloggers must work hard. We must clear our minds and focus on the party,†he added.
Najib said Umno only had about two more years before he was likely to call for the next general election, which is due in 2018, quipping however that he “may call for one sooner, though not too soonâ€.
On ensuring the country’s security from terrorism, Najib said he had asked Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria to set up a Special Court to process such cases.
“If it has to, it can even hold sessions at night. What’s important is that we don’t allow these people to do evil acts which can kill people in Malaysia,†he stressed.
He said there had not been any terror attack in the country due to firm action by the police.
On another matter, the Prime Minister said a national discourse on the way forward for Malaysia beyond 2020 would start soon.
“I want to start this discourse next year so that what Malaysia will look like after 2020 is something that will be determined by Umno along with its Barisan Nasional partners as well as civil society,†he said. – The Star Online
