LABUAN – Starbucks Malaysia, part of the world’s biggest coffee chain Starbucks Corp, has opened its 226th store here.

Sydney Quays, managing director of Starbucks Malaysia and Brunei, said this was in line with the company’s target of opening 25 stores a year in Malaysia.

“Now into 18th year of operations since our establishment in 1998, our performance is getting stronger with the opening of more stores nationwide,” he told Bernama at a coffee testing in conjunction with the opening of Starbucks’ 226th stores here yesterday.

Starbucks stores are well received nationwide, including in small towns, he said, adding that, “We have just opened our stores in Segamat, Miri and Sandakan.”

Despite slowing sales due to the initial impact of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) implementation, he said consumer purchasing support for the brand was still very strong.

“The weakening ringgit has also not helped us. To counter the situation, we have introduced programmes such as the customer loyalty card, for which we have circulated four million Starbucks Cards to date,” he said.

Starbucks Malaysia, operated by Berjaya Starbucks Coffee Company Sdn Bhd, is currently employing over 4,500 people at its 226 stores in Malaysia and Brunei. – BERNAMA
