KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Malaysia should always emulate the spirit of Hijrah as the basis of national transformation and development in a multi-racial society.
He said this was in line with Malaysia’s position as a progressive Islamic country.
“As such, with the 1Malaysia Concept in mind, we should draw on the spirit of Hijrah for the national transformation agenda,” Najib said in his message in conjunction with Maal Hijrah 1436H.
Najib stressed that the principles of acceptance, nationhood and social justice should be the foundation of society and harmony for Malaysians.
He said that guided by the spirit of Hijrah, he had tabled Budget 2015 with the theme “The People’s Economy” to continue strengthening the national economy, empowering transformation and prioritising the people’s needs.
“Our hope is that Malaysia will continue to grow through the implementation of the economic transformation programmes which we have planned and implemented,” said Najib.
The prime minister also referred to Malaysia’s recent success in being elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations’ Security Council for the 2015-2016 term.
“This is proof of the world’s recognition for the government and people of Malaysia. In fact, this should be seen as the world’s acceptance of the moderation approach, based on the Maqasid Syariah, in the country’s administration,” he said.
Najib said the year 1436 Hijrah reminded Muslims of the fixing of the Islamic calendar, which was an innovation in administration, by Saidina Umar Al-Khattab during the reign of the Islamic Caliphate.
Hijrah refers to the migration of Prophet Muhammad and his friends from Makkah to Yathrib (Madinah) in the year 622 AD. – BERNAMA
