KUALA LUMPUR – A special body will be set up under the Malaysian Board of Counsellors (LKM) to provide expertise training to counsellors in the country, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said.
This is to enable LKM to make optimal use of their expertise in various areas of counselling, she said at the opening of the LKM’s Counselling Seminar 2014 here today.
Rohani also called on more people, including members of non-governmental organisations, clubs or associations, to venture into counselling by becoming volunteer counsellors.
“The existing counsellors can help them to become trained counsellors,” she said.
As at July this year, she said a total of 5,445 counsellors were registered under the Counsellors Act 1998 (Act 580) and that the ministry targeted 11,000 counsellors to be registered by the year 2020.
At the same time, she also called on more students to pursue counselling studies to help increase the number. – BERNAMA
