JOHOR BHARU – The junior squads of Australia, Pakistan and England were victorious on the first day of the Sultan of Johor Cup hockey tournament at Taman Daya Hockey Stadium, here today.
Seeded team, England garnered full points after defeating Malaysia 3-1.
England opened the score via a field goal by Page Nick in the 18th minute before Malaysia equalised when Mohamad Akhimullah Anuar Esook scored a field goal in the 23rd minute.
The cheers of the national squad were shortlived as the English visitors were in the lead again via a penalty corner by Will Calnan one minute later, before Christopher Proctor sealed the match for England in the the 60th minute.
In the evening, Australia blasted Japan 6-0 and proved they were no longer the weak team in the 2015 edition.
Australia were up as early as the sixth minute from a penalty corner by Andrew Scanlon before Kiran Arunasalam piled up a field goal in the 19th minute.
In the 23rd minute, it was 3-0 for Australia when Joshou Simmonds converted a penalty corner.
In the second half, Max Hendrey scored a field goal to make it 4-0 for Australia in the 61st minute, while Tom Craig and Max Hendrey were on target in the 63rd and 70th minute for Australia’s thumping 6-0 triumph over Japan.
Last year’s biggest losers, Pakistan showed their were no longer the whipping boys when they crushed seeded team New Zealand 5-2 this evening.
Pakistan stunned New Zealand with two goals in the first half starting with Muhammad Bilal Qadir via a field goal in the 22nd minute before Ali Mubasshir added another from a penalty corner in the 33rd minute.
In the second half, New Zealand known as The Black Sticks pulled one goal back through Sam Lane in the 46th minute before Pakistan made 3-1 via a Rana Riaz field goal two minutes later.
In the 59th minute, Max Wilcox close the gap with a penalty corner for New Zealand but not long after that Pakistan scored their fourth goal via Rana Riaz in the 65th minute to keep make it 4-2 for Pakistan.
Pakistan completed the 5-2 rout of New Zealand with a 70th minute field goal by Rana Riaz who scored a hattrick. – BERNAMA
