PUTRAJAYA – Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Berua, an Orang Asli school in Hulu Terengganu, Terengganu, will have an additional building donated by an oil and gas company, Tanjung Offshore Bhd (TOB).
The contribution for the construction of the building was handed over by TOB deputy executive chairman Tan Sri Tan Kean Soon to the Terengganu Education Department director Shahfruddin Ali Hussin in a ceremony witnessed by Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.
TOB chairman Datuk Dr Nik Norzrul Thani Nik Hassan Thani said the construction of the RM200,000 one-storey building with four classrooms would begin next month and completed within four months.
“The construction of the school building will follow the specification set by the Education Ministry,” he told reporters after the ceremony here today.
Located about 20 kilometres from Kuala Berang, the school, which has about 100 pupils, is facing a shortage of classrooms, forcing teachers to use the school cafeteria as the teachers’ room.
Mahdzir in his speech said more than 90 schools from 10,179 schools across the country were Orang Asli schools that are maintained in good condition to draw Orang Asli children.
“Allegations that the ministry does not give attention on educating the people is not true, because we have been building dormitories in schools aswell as village dormitories for secondary school students to stay while they attended nearby schools,” he said. – BERNAMA
