KUALA LUMPUR – There is no fighting or riots at the Low Yat Plaza in the city tonight and the situation is under control, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Abu Bakar.

“Do not believe rumours. Police are in control (of the situation),” he said in his Twitter handle.

He said police will take action against the two groups of people involved in a fight at the shopping complex yesterday.

He also denied allegations on social media that the fighting arose out of racial issues and that it only involved two parties.

“Police have arrested some of those involved in the fighting last night and are tracking down the others. Let the police take action,” he said.

Checks by Bernama found hundreds of people had gathered in front of the plaza at about 8 pm today, believed to be friends of the individual who was detained by police after the fighting there last night.

Yesterday, police had detained a man, aged 22, who was believed to have been involved in a fight at the Low Yat Plaza, allegedly because he was dissatisfied for being accused of stealing a handphone.

The 7.38 pm incident started after the suspect’s unhappiness on being detained by Plaza Low Yat’s security guards when he was accused of stealing a handphone.

The owner of the shop, See Ming Ho, 28, had claimed the suspect pretended to want to buy a Lenovo S860 telephone before running off with it.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Tajudin Md Isa when met by reporters said police detained three more individuals tonight at the plaza.

Those detained were from 22 to 25 years old.

He said they were detained after they tried to engage in provocative acts during a gathering outside the plaza.

“I assure that the police will carry out investigations which are transparent and fair to both parties.

“The public is advised not to listen, believe or spread rumours on social media. Rely on the police for information,” he said.
