PETALING JAYA: The mother of former police commando Sirul Azhar Umar claims that her son has been victimised.
Piah Samat, 74, was quoted by PAS news organ Harakah Daily as saying that she hoped her son would not be hanged to death for the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu.
“Only God knows what I am feeling now, I pray to God that he is safe,†she was quoted as having said during a visit by PAS leaders to her home in Bukit Gantang, Perak.
Piah said that Sirul, 43, had been responsible towards his family and always communicated with her and his siblings, even though he was busy with work.
She said that since the picture of Sirul was made public, fellow villagers had given her moral support.
“The community has been supportive although there are those who are saying all sorts of things,†she said.
Sirul failed to appear in the Federal Court on Jan 13 when it sentenced him and former chief inspector Azilah Hadri, 38, to death for the October 2006 murder.
Sirul is believed to have entered Australia on a tourist visa and a valid passport last year.
He was detained last Tuesday by Australian immigration officials after an Interpol red notice was issued.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported last Friday that Sirul, 43, had been transferred to the maximum-security section of the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre in Sydney.
According to ABC, the former commando was living with family members west of Brisbane when he was detained.-The Star
