MARAN – A single mother pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here today to a charge of submitting a false report on a drowning incident in January.
Siti Rukiah Hassan, 37, made the plea after the charge was read out to her in Malay before Magistrate Nur Syafiqah Noorida.
The accused who lived in Felda Jengka 14 had allegedly committed the offence at 4.30pm on Jan 21, near a bridge at Felda 15 here.
The charge, under Section 182 of the Penal Code, provided for a fine not exceeding RM2,000 or jail up to six months, or both, upon conviction.
In mitigation, Siti Rukiah who was unrepresented appealed for the bail to be reduced as she was a single mother who only sold ‘nasi lemak’. The court allowed for her release on bail of RM1,500 in one surety and set April 2 for mention.
Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Salam Yusof appeared for the prosecution.
On Jan 22, the media reported that a woman who had lodged a false report on her own drowning on the pretext of wanting to meet her four children who were under the care of her ex-husband in Raub.
The accused who was divorced last year had allegedly concocted the plan with her 55-year-old mother who claimed that her daughter was feared drowned after being swept away by strong currents while fishing at the river. – BERNAMA
