TUMPAT – The Wanita and Puteri wings of Umno can help ensure Barisan Nasional’s (BN) victory in the Pengkalan Kubor state seat by-election here.
Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said their ‘silent force’ approach used during the campaign could attract women voters in the area.
“The women are usually capable of changing the hearts of women voters as they move as a silent force.
“They move quietly when campaigning from house to house, but they actually have a big impact to the outcome of an election,” he told Bernama when met after his visit to the voting centre in Kampung Tujoh, Pengkalan Kubor here today.
He said because of their large numbers, the two wings of Umno have been urged to organise continuous programmes right up to polling day so as to ensure that every vote goes to BN.
Ahmad Shabery, who is also the Minister of Communications and Multimedia, said the BN government always encouraged women to be involved in all fields and did not deny them their rights to politics.
He said women participation in Umno was always increasing and they played an important role in supporting the party machinery in every election, ensuring the victory of the BN candidate.
“When I ask them, all the women say they value the future and safety of their children and the present government is capable of giving the best,” the Kemaman member of parliament said.
The Pengkalan Kubor by-election this Thursday is being held following the death of its incumbent, Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar on Aug 20.
It will see a three-cornered fight between BN’s Mat Razi Mat Ail, PAS candidate Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim and Independent Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary.
During the 13th general election, Noor Zahidi defeated PKR candidate Sharun Ibrahim and Izat Bukhary (Independent) with a majority of 1,736 votes. – BERNAMA
