KUALA LUMPUR – Wanita UMNO chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil hopes the movement’s members selected as a candidate for the 14th General Election (GE14) are not fielded in ‘black’ (non-winnable) areas.
She said this was because the list of Wanita candidates sent to party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for consideration had passed the screening requirements.
“I remind the authorities not to send the Wanita candidates to unsafe areas merely to achieve the 30 per cent women candidates, we do not want this.
“…but I believe this will not happen…I am merely reminding. I want women (candidates) to be fielded in appropriate areas,” she said at a media conference, here today.
Previously, Wanita UMNO had proposed that the party leadership chose 30 per cent of the candidates from the wing to contest in the Parliamentary and State seats in GE14.
Commenting further, Shahrizat said in looking for qualified women candidates, she was cooperating with the UMNO Liaison Heads and Wanita UMNO heads in the respective states who would know better the candidates for their states.
Among the criteria considered are that the candidates must be winnable and could win the hearts of the constituents.
“We don’t select candidates at random…choosing the candidates is serious business. The prime minister looks very seriously at the criteria to be chosen in selecting the candidates, but I believe women candidates have the characteristics that the president is looking for.” she added. – BERNAMA
