KUANTAN – A boy was found drowned at noon today after being swept away by swift water while bathing in Sungai Pahang near Kampung Salong, Pekan yesterday evening.
Before the incident, the victim Muhammad Danish Ashraf Mohd Norkamarulezwan, 7, and two siblings went to the river with five friends, aged between seven and 12, and a neighbour.
Pekan police chief DSP Amran Sidek said in the 6.10 pm incident yesterday, the victim from Felda Chini 3 near Pekan was believed to have been swept away by strong currents and could not be saved by the neighbour.
“Muhammad Danish Ashraf, who was not a good swimmer, was swept away to the deeper section which caused him to drown,” he said when contacted by Bernama here, today.
Amran said police with firemen and villagers mobilised a search and rescue operation after being alerted of the incident.
He said the victim was found at 12.50 pm today at the bank of the river near Mambang about 10 kilometres from the spot the victim was swept away.
The body of the victim was sent to Pekan Hospital for post-mortem, he added.
Meanwhile in BAGAN DATOH, a senior citizen was feared drowned while looking for mussels at the beach in Beting Beras Basah, here, today.
Hutan Melintang Fire and Rescue Station head, Soh Tuan Lah said the department received a call at about 11.50 am this morning.
When contacted by Bernama, Soh said six firemen were at the incident location to search for the victim believed to be in his 60’s.
He said about 21 personnel from the Civil Defence Department, Rela as well as police also joined in the search and rescue operation. – BERNAMA
