in Sports

MELAKA – Arch rivals Malaysia and Thailand beat their opponents in the men’s group matches of ISTAF Malaysia Super Series Championship 2015 here, yesterday.

Malaysia, who were represented by under 25 year-old players, beat Singapore 2-0 (21-13 and 21-16) in a Group B match played at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC).

Earlier, jitters by feeder Farhan Adam put Malaysia on the back pedal, but the 2,000 strong supporters lifted the players who rallied from 2-6 down to lead Singapore 9-7.

Khairol Zaman Hamir was on form as his killer smashes piled up the points for Malaysia against the Singapore line-up of Farhan Amran, Yassin Suhaimi and Hafiz Nor Izam Ja’afar.

Thailand beat Myanmar 2-0 (21-7 and 21-18) in a Group A match with the latter providing stiff competition in the second game.

A powerful Thailand overwhelmed Myanmar 21-7 in the first game.

However, Myanmar found their rhythm and led Thailand 9-8 forcing Thailand to introduce their top server (tekong) Siriwat Sakha.

Siriwat’s killer service changed the game and Thailand went on to win by a close 21-18.

Indonesia beat China 2-0 (21-15 and 21-10) in another men’s Group B match while South Korea beat Vietnam 2-0 (21-18 and 21-17) in a women’s Group A match. – BERNAMA
