SEMPORNA (Sabah) – A one-stop tourism centre of international standard will be set up in Semporna to disseminate information on local tourism products to domestic and foreign tourists.
Sabah Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Ramlee Marahaban said the centre was one of the efforts to draw more tourists and investors interested in the tourism sector in Semporna.
“The ‘in situ’ centre incorporating the offices of tourism agencies and operators will be equipped with various infrastructure and is set to become a new landmark in Semporna, which would boost the district’s economy.
“It would also provide an opportunity for more local tourism operators to be actively involved, creating job opportunities for the local people in Semporna, ” he said to reporters after officiating at a basketball final match in Kampung Srijaya, Simunul, here.
Ramlee said Semporna recorded, on average, 1,000 tourist arrivals daily, thus strengthening the need for a one-stop centre here.
“Eighty per cent of the tourists recorded were from China while the other tourists came from 14 other countries including Japan and South Korea,” he said.
Ramlee also announced that a new basketball court would be built in Kampung Srijaya for the benefit of youths in Simunul and Semporna.
He said the provision of the facility was in line with the government’s efforts to build a healthy community through sports. – BERNAMA
