Following a speculation about drug abuse and emotional distress following her split from Justin Bieber when she took time out in 2014, but now Selena Gomez comes clean on her break.
According to an interview with Billboard magazine, she revealed that she underwent chemotherapy treatment after being diagnosed with lupus.
The treatment also caused her to cancel the Australian and Asian leg of her world tour, before checking into rehab in early 2014.
“I was diagnosed with Lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke.”
Gomez, 23, criticised reports in tabloids that suggested her absence could be because of drink or drugs when it was because of her lupus diagnosis.
“I wanted so badly to say: ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.’ I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again,” she explained to Billboard.
The “Love You Like A Love Song” hitmaker went on to criticise the tabloid press, who have spent years picking apart her relationship with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber as “vile”.
“I’ve been working since I was seven. I’ve been a Unicef ambassador since I was 17. It’s so disappointing that I’ve become a tabloid story,” she said.
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal tissue.
This process can lead to destruction of the kidney, heart, brain, spine, and lung tissue.
It can affect almost any system in the body but its exact cause is unknown.
