KUALA LUMPUR – Thirty two-time Malaysia Cup winners Selangor have qualified for the current edition’s quarter-finals after garnering an unassailable 10 points from five matches in Group C.
The Red Giants continued their winning streak by beating T-Team 2-1 at Shah Alam Stadium, Saturday night.
Selangor’s goals were scored by Andik Vermansyah in the 18th minute and Ahmad Hazwan Bakri in the 72nd minute while T-Team’s only goal came from Mohd Zarulizwan Mazlan in the 28th minute.
Singapore club, Lions XII also look strong for a quarter-final berth after securing 10 points from five matches but must win their next match to be sure as the bottom two teams in the group have four points a piece but only having played four matches.
Lions XII topped group A after edging JDT II 1-0 from a goal by Shahdan Sulaiman in the 49th at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
The club side were also assisted by a shock 1-3 defeat by Kedah to Terengganu at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Kuala Terengganu.
Terengganu’s Canadian import Issey Nakajima-Farran blasted two goals in the 24th and 73rd minutes while Hasmizan Kamaruddin netted the team’s third goal in the 76th minute. Bang Seungwhan netted Kedah’s consolation goal in the 68th minute.
Meanwhile, 2015 Super League champions, Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) extended their unbeaten record to three matches after mauling Armed Forces 4-0 in Group B at Tan Sri Hassan Yunos Stadium in Larkin.
JDT’s goals were scored by S. Chanthuru in the 11th minute, captain Safiq Rahim (24th minute), Luciano Figueroa (36th minute) and Mohd Nazrin Mohd Nawi in the 69th minute.
In another Group B match, Sarawak collected three points with a 1-0 win over Perak from a goal by J. Partiban in the 34th minute at Sarawak Stadium in Kuching.
In a Group C match, Felda United and Kelantan shared a point each after a 2-2 draw at the Selayang Stadium.
Felda’s Brazillian import striker, Thiago Augusto Fernandes scored both goals, in the 18th and 32nd minutes, while Ahmad Fakri Saarani scored in the 28th minute and captain, Mohd Badhri Radzi found the net in the 43rd minute for Kelantan.
Meanwhile, defending champions, Pahang suffered an embarrassing 1-4 defeat at the hands of minnow PKNS FC at the Darul Makmur Stadium, Kuantan.
The goals for PKNS were contributed by Gabriel Miguel Guerra in the 15th minute, Pedro Henrique (25th minute), Mohd Nizam Abu Bakar (82nd minute) and Patrick Ronaldinho Wleh in the 90th minute while Pahang’s consolation goal was scored by Zesh Rehman in the 45th minute.
At the City Stadium, Police beat Penang 3-2 in a Group D match.
Three goals for The Cops were scored by Mohamadou Sumareh in the 4th and 84th minute as well as one goal from Ahmad Nizam Mohd Rodzi in the 19th minute while Lee Gil Hoon and Mohamad Faisal Abdul Halim netted for the hosts in the 67th and 90th minutes respectively.
The Malaysia Cup campaign resumed tonight after being postponed by the Football Association of Malaysia following the haze situation which afflicted the country earlier.
