PETALING JAYA – Malaysia Cup defending champion, Selangor will face a tough challenge after being drawn together with two-time champion Kelantan and Pahang FC besides Kuala Lumpur in Group B.
At the draw held at Sri Pentas, Bandar Utama and attended by Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) deputy president Datuk Seri Afandi Hamzah last night, Super League defending champion Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) had an easy path after being drawn in Group C together with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Perak and PKNS FC.
Premier League leader, Melaka United, who qualified for the Malaysia Cup after seven years, were drawn in Group D together with Felda United, Terengganu FA and Negeri Sembilan.
Malaysia Cup 2015 finalist, Kedah also had an easy path after being drawn in Group A together with Terengganu FC II, Sarawak and JDT II. The Malaysia Cup tournament this year is expected to start at the end of July.
The new Malaysia Cup format introduced by Football Malaysia Limited Liability Partnership (FMLLP) beginning this year will see 11 best teams in the Super League and five top teams in the Premier League after the completion of the 11 matches in each league, qualifying for the Malaysia Cup.
Each team will play two rounds in the league format namely three matches as the host and three matches as the visitor.
The two top teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Cup using the ‘home and away’ format.
Results of the Drawn:
Group A: Terengganu FC II, Kedah, Sarawak, JDT II.
Group B: Selangor, Kelantan, Pahang FC, Kuala Lumpur.
Group C: JDT, PDRM, Perak, PKNS FC.
Group D: Felda United, Terengganu FA, Melaka United, Negeri Sembilan.
