IPOH: A scrap metal worker has been sentenced to hang by the High Court here for the death of an 18-month-old toddler.
C.S Senguttuwan, 30, was found guilty today by judicial commissioner Noorin Badaruddin of driving his car into a tent at a wedding in Kampar and fatally knocking down T. Thamilarasan.
He committed the offence at Kampung Tersusun, Kopisan Baru, Gopeng, Kampar around 11 pm on May 25, 2013.
Senguttuwan was also found guilty of two charges of attempting to murder S.Tarmenthiran, then aged three, and S.Punjala, then aged 57, at the same place and date.
The court sentenced him to 10 years’ jail on each of the charge and ordered the terms to run concurrently.
Noorin in her judgement said Senguttuwan’s testimony that he did not see anyone at the tent was unacceptable.
She said the tent, as proven by the prosecution, was brightly lit at the time as a wedding reception was being held and attended by more than 50 guests.
The judge also noted the evidence of a prosecution witness who is a policeman.
“The witness testified that he had spotted the accused, who was wanted for alleged involvement in a riot, in a car at Gopeng. He said the accused upon seeing him tried to escape by driving away.
“The witness said the accused had stopped his car upon reaching the wedding venue but when he realised that he was being trailed, restarted his car engine and drove and twice plough into the tent,” noted Noorin.
The judge held that there was criminal intent on the part of the accused.
Deputy public prosecutor Harris Ong Jeffrey Ong represented the prosecution while counsel Charan Singh defended Thamilarasan.– BERNAMA
