KUALA LUMPUR – Good education will be available for the needs of street children and those who are marginalised in Chow Kit, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The Prime Minister said that the Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih’s (SBJK) seven-storey academic building will be ready in November next year while the hostel block will be ready in 2020.
“The Chow Kit area will be transformed into an area where good education is made available. Who could have imagined that Chow Kit would be transformed into an area that has the potential to improve the future of children,” he said during a working visit to the construction site of SBJK at Lorong Haji Hussein 2 here Thursday.
Also present was Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.
Najib, who had last year announced an allocation of RM30mil for the school, said that the academic block will have a nice design and colour.
He said the effort showed the Government’s emphasis on opening up education opportunities for all children regardless of their socio-economic background.
In his speech, he said that from 2009, 67% of children went to pre-school and it increased to 85.6% in 2016.
“We believe that by 2020, it will be a 100% enrolment,” he said.
He said the Convention on the Rights of the Child recognises the right of equal opportunity to all children and making primary education compulsory and free. – The Star
