KOTA SAMARAHAN – Sarawak will have 124 more 1Malaysia Internet Centres (PI1M) by year end, said Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari.
Sarawak currently has 95 PI1M.
Jailani said the government had allocated RM124 million for the 124 PI1M and that the effort was taken because the government wanted to narrow the digital divide between urban and rural areas.
“PI1M enables rural folks to have broadband access and enjoy ICT facilities,” he told reporters after opening the PI1M in Kampung Sungai Mata here today.
Jailani said with the setting up of the PI1M, the ministry through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia agency will introduce more registered postal agents to facilitate the people in conducting e-Dagang (online businesses).
“For this, the ministry has instructed Pos Malaysia to upgrade its e-Dagang last mile and logistics network in Sarawak,” he said.
Meanwhile, Jailani said the government’s concerted efforts saw the successful introduction of broadband coverage in the vast state.
“As a result, the broadband penetration rate (in Sarawak) rose from a mere 13.6 per cent in 2008 to 78.3 per cent last year,” he said. – BERNAMA
