KUCHING – All 1,754 polling stations for the 11th Sarawak state election will open at 8am today.
Election Commission chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said most of the polling centres will close at 5pm while some earlier, as early as 9am, depending on location and number of voters.
The polling centres consist of school halls or classrooms, longhouses and indoor stadiums.
A total of 227 candidates are vying for 80 seats. Two seats were won uncontested by Barisan Nasional candidates on nomination day on April 25.
They are Bukit Kota and Bukit Sari which were won by the incumbents, Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan respectively.
On Tuesday (May 3), 72 per cent of the 24,604 early voters consisting of police and military personnel and their spouses turned out to vote at 79 designated polling centres.
The State Legislative Assembly was dissolved on April 11. Following a redelineation exercise the number of seats in the assembly was increased by 11, from 71 to 82.
The weather forecast is mostly overcast skies in the morning and rain in the afternoon, especially in the divisions of Betong, Sarikei, Mukah and Bintulu.
