KUCHING – The number of victims at two relief centres this afternoon stood at 629 from 193 families in the district of Serian, Sarawak relatively unchanged from this morning.
Sarawak Civil Defence Department (JPAM) public relations officer Siti Huzaimah Ibrahim said no new relief centres were opened today despite flash floods occurring around the city due to heavy rains since early this morning.
She said all agencies related to flood management were monitoring the situation, especially in low-lying areas, which prior to this, had been inundated due to rain.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operations) Farhan Sufyan Borhan said the department was busy dealing with about 17 emergency flood-related calls from around the city this morning.
He said among the aid operations conducted were relocating vehicles trapped on roads inundated by floodwater, moving patients from the ground floor to the upper floor at the Sarawak General Hospital, clearing landslides on roads, monitoring the water levels (of rivers) and others.
Nevertheless, he said the latest situation showed the floodwater was receding in several areas and the levels of the water in rivers especially here were slowly going down.
In fact, he said the areas in the city such as around Padang Merdeka which was inundated by flood water this morning, had almost returned to normal as of 1 pm. – BERNAMA
