INCHEON – Sailing has lifted the gloom surrounding the Malaysian camp which was stunned by news that wushu exponent was stripped of the gold medal after failing a dope test, by winning a gold and three silver medals.
Sailors Mohamad Faizal Norizan and Ahmad Syukri Abdul Aziz swept the gold medal in the men’s 420 Dinghy after accumulating 21 penalty points from 12 races, at the Wangsan Sailing Marina.
Mohamad Faizal-Ahmad Syukri beat Japan’s Ibuki Koizumi/Kotaro Matsuo who accumulated 27 penalty points while Singaporean duo Loh Jia Yi/Jonathan Yeo (41 penalty points) took the bronze medal.
The gold medal race which was supposed to be held on Monday was postponed to Tuesday due to rain and bad weather.
“I and Ahmad Syukri came into the competition without any pressure although Japan and Singapore were determined to beat us,” Mohamad Faizal told reporters after the race, in Incheon.
Malaysia’s three silver medals came through Khairulnizam Afendy (men’s Laser), Dhiauddin Rozaini (men’s Optimist) and Nuraisyah Jamal-Umi Norwahidah Sallahuddin (women’s 420 Class).
At the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, Malaysia won a gold medal through Khairunnisa Mohd Afendy/Norashikin Mohd Sayed in the women’s International 420 class. – Bernama
