KOTA KINABALU: The parents of a 16-year-old schoolgirl, who was allegedly involved in a religious conversion, will be transferring her and her siblings to another school.
The girl’s uncle Michael Frederick said the girl’s father Jilius Yapoo and his wife had decided that their four children studying at the SMK Kinarut would be transferred to another school after the Chinese New Year holidays.
“They are looking at SMK Majakir in Papar or a school in Kiulu,†said Michael, the chairman of the Village Security and Development Committee of Kampung Kaiduan where the family is from.
He said Jilius and his wife would be discussing the matter with their daughter and three other children aged between 13 and 15 studying at SMK Kinarut.
The school came into the spotlight after it was reported that Jilius’ daughter had allegedly converted to Islam there without her parents being informed of the matter.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said the girl had expressed her interest in embracing Islam since she was in Year Six.
He added that the police have launched an inquiry into the incident after the girl’s father lodged a police report on being informed by his daughter that she had converted to Islam.
He said the police inquiry had found that the girl was still a Christian.
Jilius, a rubber tapper, insisted that his daughter remain a Christian until she is 18, after which she can decide on the faith of her choice.-The Star
