KOTA KINABALU – The Fisheries Department has revoked the fishing vessel licences of two local boats owners found to have cloned dilapidated vessels with other boats believed to be from Vietnam.
Sabah Deputy Chief minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin who is also Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister said the department had solid evidence to revoke the licences.
He said the department carried out an investigation following a report lodged by the Kota Kinabalu Fishing Vessel Owners Association that some boats were carrying out illegal fishing off Pulau Mengalum.
“An inspection on the boats revealed that their licences were still valid; they also possessed a trawl fishery licence and record of fishing activities as well as sale of fish.
“However, an inspection carried out by the Sabah Ports and Wharf Department and the Fisheries department found that the cloning allegation did have basis,” he said in a statement here, today.
Yahya said the department would request for the Attorney-general’s Chambers to study the investigation papers and determine another legal provision under which the boat owners could be charged. -BERNAMA
