KUALA LUMPUR – The success of Malaysia which played a key role in heading the 3rd ASEAN-United States Summit here in November last year has led to a major conference in Sunnylands, California, United States, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
She said Malaysia’s role under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as chairman of ASEAN in 2015 was recognised by the world’s only super power.
“The commitment of the national leadership convinced US President Barack Obama to invite all 10 ASEAN leaders to the two-day 2016 US-ASEAN Summit in Sunnylands, California.
“Congratulations to all quarters who have been with the government in the effort to ensure Malaysia continues to respected worldwide,” she said in a statement here, Tuesday.
Azalina said the Prime Minister had also been successful in boosting the ASEAN-US strategic partnership to strengthen ASEAN’s economic growth especially via innovation and entrepreneurship which were the main focus other than regional security issues.
“Via the formation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, whereby the United States is also participating, I believe Malaysia will encourage institutions, agencies and industry players to boost innovation and entrepreneurship programmes for entrepreneurs to explore new markets which would reduce tariffs and expand the market in free trade.
“I hope Malaysians will continue to be positive towards the effort of the Prime Minister in tackling numerous economic, politics and global security issues via the strategic cooperation,” she said.
The US-ASEAN Leaders’ Summit started Monday (Tuesday in Malaysia).
