Legendary local rock singer Awie has pledged to donate his organs.
Awie, whose name is Ahmad Azhar Othman, said he had pledged to donate everyÂthing in his body that could be used.
“I think donating one’s organs is a good thing to do as it will help those who really need them,†he said yesterday.
The 47-year-old vocalist of the rock band Wing made his pledge in Kota Baru on Monday in conjunction with the blood and organ donation programme organised by Politeknik Kota Baru.
At the event, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya, ministry secretary-general Datuk Farida Mohd Ali and Kelantan health director Datuk Dr Ahmad Razin Ahmad Mahir also pledged their organs.
Awie said the act of donating organs after one’s death was akin to charity.
“I believe, when you die, the body will go back to earth and your soul will go to heaven.
“You cannot do anything with the body after that, so it is better to give the organs to others as sedekah,†said Awie who is also Rakan Sihat vice-president.
He urged people to pledge their organs as it would help many who were suffering.
