BUKIT MERTAJAM – A robbery attempt by six men on a goldsmith shop in Jalan Stesen, here, today was foiled when a shop worker pressed a security button to automatically close the shop’s metal shutter, causing the robbers to flee.

Penang CID chief, SAC Mazlan Kesah (pic) said in the 4.30pm incident, the six men smashed the glass door before three of them entered the shop and ordered the workers to put the jewellery on display into a bag.

“They also smashed the glass showcase but in that commotion, one of the workers pressed a security button for the metal shutter to automatically come down to close the shop.

“On realising this, the three intruders panicked and escaped on three motorcycles together with their three accomplices waiting outside,” he said when contacted.

Mazlan said the six men who wore green vests and full-face helmets, fled without taking any jewellery from the goldsmith shop.

“The attempted robbery took five minutes and there were seven workers but no customers at the time, and none of the workers was injured in the incident.”

He said police would study the CCTV recording at the shop. – Bernama
