JITRA – Robbers blew up an automated teller machine at a bank in Pekan Jitra I here early today, escaping with a cash loot totaling more than RM300,000.
Kubang Pasu district police chief Supt Abd Rahim Abdullah said based on the closed-circuit television recording, the crime was committed at 5.04 am by two masked men who came in a Toyota Camry.
He said the suspects were believed to have tied a one-foot long pipe bomb to the ATM’s cash dispensing slot after prising wide its top and bottom with a piece of iron.
Police also found a piece of the pipe bomb, about half a foot long, and cash scattered on the ground amounting to RM600, he told reporters here today.
Some of the bank’s glass panels also broke in the impact of the explosion but no casualties had been reported.
The case is similar to the incident involving an ATM in Simpang Kuala, Alor Setar last February in which about RM300,000 was also carted away by the culprits, according to Abd Rahim.
Meanwhile, a shopowner who only wanted to be identified as Devi, in her 40s, said the explosion was deafening even though her premises was located about 200 metres from the scene.
