Retirees Can Still Contribute To Development: PM

in Latest

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today launched the Malaysian Government Pensioners Foundation, which will help retirees remain active through various activities and programmes.

He said 21,000 civil servants retire every year, and they should remain active and continue to contribute towards the country’s development.

Najib also announced an allocation of RM5 million for the foundation to kick-start its activities.

“The government is concerned. Some of the retirees feel unwanted. We want them to be active in the community,” he said, adding that some of pensioners had worked for 30 to 35 years.

“It is not about earning a living but it has a bigger role and objective. Each one of you contributed towards the country,” Najib added.

“After retirement, the dream continues in the hearts of retirees and together with the present civil servant workforce of 1.61 million, both groups can determine the future of the country,” he said.

The government, he said, would continue to make sure Malaysia’s economy grows at the rate of 5 or 6 per cent every year.

“With better economy, we can provide better facilities and allowances to retirees and civil servants.”

Najib hoped through the foundation, the members will look into welfare and social issues such as having more social meetings and more comfortable health or housing to continue having a comfortable life.-NST
