MELAKA – Restore Melaka’s glory by using the state’s historical values, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
He said Melaka’s civilisation dated more than 600 years ago and reached its peak in the 15th and 16th century where it enjoyed good relations with China.
“If we go to china, apart from Kuala Lumpur, they (China people) will mention Melaka.
“That is why when Melaka Chief Minister proposed having ties with Guangdong, the cabinet gave special approval. Soon, a memorandum of understanding between the two cities will be signed,” he said at the Aidilfitri Solidarity gathering with the Prime Minister at Dataran 1Malaysia, Klebang here Saturday night.
It was attended by about 50,000 people.
Also present were the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Melaka Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob; Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi; Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Wee Ka Siong and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron.
Najib said the government had approved a project to extend the runway at the Melaka International Airport (LTAM) in Batu Berendam to enable the airport to handle more international flights, especially from China.
“I want to see more aircraft, especially from China and Guangdong operating at the airport,” he added.
On development in Melaka, Najib said he saw the potential in the coastal expressway project, worth RM1.1 billion, proposed by Melaka.
He said the ‘high speed rail’ project between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore with a stop in Melaka would also contribute to the growth of the service sector in Melaka.
