KUALA LUMPUR – Participants of the ‘Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu’ or red-shirt rally started to march from the various staging points to Padang Merbok, the venue of the event, at about 2 pm.
They had earlier assembled at the Federal Territory Mosque, National Mosque, Putra World Trade Centre and the Craft Complex in Jalan Conlay.
They were heard chanting slogans and holding placards and banners that reflected their sentiments.
Some of them were seen entering the Bukit Bintang area, prompting the temporary closure of a shopping complex there as a precautionary measure.
The red-shirt rally gained momentum as the haze situation in the capital improved today with an-almost clear sky.
As at 1 pm, the Air Pollutant Index recorded for Kuala Lumpur (at Batu Muda station) was 82, compared to 142 yesterday evening.
Earlier, UMNO information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan, in a red shirt, met the rally participants at PWTC and Jalan Conlay.
Other leaders at the rally included National Silat Federation (Pesaka) president Tan Sri Ali Rustam. – BERNAMA
