A 29-year-old woman named Hu Juan, from Henan, China, suffers from a rare condition that makes her appear more than twice her age.
In 2003, 18-year-old Hu got married and gave birth to a son. However, her youthful looks deteriorated drastically in the six months after his birth.
Numerous medical checkups over the years revealed that she is in good health except for the rapidly-ageing skin on her face and neck.
The young mother was diagnosed with Cutis laxa, a connective tissue disorder characterized by skin which becomes loose, saggy and wrinkled at a rapid speed due to a loss of elasticity. Sufferers therefore appear much older than their actual ages.
According to Xinhua, less than 10 people in the world have been diagnosed with the disorder. There is currently no effective treatment for the condition.
Shanghaiist reported that in the past 11 years, Hu avoided going outside and looking into a mirror.
She also noticed that her young son had become more distant because he was ashamed to tell his friends that Hu is his mother.
The disparity in her looks and age, other people’s unkind comments and her son’s rejection greatly depressed Hu, who attempted to end her life twice in despair.
However, she found solace in her supportive husband who continues to love and care for her despite her condition.
On Nov 30, Hu travelled to Shanghai to undergo corrective surgery to restore some elasticity to her skin, as well as regain her long-lost confidence.MYNEWSHUB
