ALOR SETAR – In celebrating this year’s Merdeka Day, Ramli Mustafa, 62, from Kampung Borhan, Jalan Langgar here has once again decorated his Toyota van with the Jalur Gemilang.
The father of eight, affectionatley known as “Ramli Merdeka” among friends, said it took him three days to paint his eight-year old van which is used for his daily activities.
He said it did not cost much to paint the national colours on the van as he has already had the automotive paint kit and some spare car paint to do the job.
“My intention is to create the spirit of Merdeka and encourage others especially the younger generation to fly the Jalur Gemilang.
“If I can do it at my age, why can’t the young do something to personify the Merdeka spirit,” he said when met recently.
According to Ramli for the past five years he had been painting his van with the national colours, images of the national leaders as well as the National Day theme which varies every year.
Ramli who is self-employed also owns a Jalur Gemilang outfit which he had handsewn it himself to wear on special Merdeka occasions.
He added that his enthusiasm was shared by his wife Siti Jamilah Ismail, 57, and their children aged between 25 and 40 years.
Ramli hoped that the younger generation would follow his example in expressing their love for the country instead of participating in protests and illegal demonstrations which could affect peace and harmony.
“I love this country because I realise our past leaders had put in a lot of effort and struggle in achieving independence, so that we can enjoy the peace and freedom today,” he added. – BERNAMA
