KUALA LUMPUR – The Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tuanku Hajah Haminah today feted 310 orphans at the Istana Negara here in conjunction with the official birthday celebrations of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.
The orphans, from the Yayasan Anak-Anak Yatim Sultanah Haminah (YAYSH) and the Social Welfare Department, were feted to a meal as well dances, songs and a gamelan presentation.
At the event, the queen who is also the patron of YAYSH, presented donations in the form of RM100-vouchers for the National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN-i), a Jakel raya outfit, book vouchers and tokens from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) scheme to the orphans.
Her Majesty also donated cash of RM1,000 to 10 orphans for their excellent performances in the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR), Form Three Assessment (PT3) and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations last year.
One recipient, Nurhaliza Saupi, 18, from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Takis, Papar, Sabah, told Bernama she was very touched by the occasion because she met the Queen at close range.
“I am very excited and happy at being able to step foot into the Istana Negara, I am very grateful for this joyous event and for receiving the donations from Raja Permaisuri,” she said, adding that she would use the money in the best way.
Before leaving the ceremony, Tuanku Hajah Haminah shook hands with the orphans and other guests.
Among those present were the Tunku Puan Temenggong Kedah Puan Sri Tengku Maliha Tengku Ariff and Raja Puan Muda Perak Tunku Soraya Sultan Abdul Halim.
Guests included Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, wife of the Chief Secretary to the Government Puan Sri Rohani Abdullah and YAYSH board director Datuk Rosli Awang.
After the event, the orphans were taken on a visit of the Istana Negara such as to the Balairong Seri and the Dewan Santapan. – BERNAMA
