ARAU – The Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail today granted an audience to the top management of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang, at Istana Arau, here, yesterday evening.
The USM delegation led by its vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Asma Ismail also included the four deputy vice-chancellors, the registrar, treasurer and director of the USM campus in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan.
Also present during the audience were the Raja Muda Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail and Raja Puan Muda Perlis, Tuanku Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin, as USM chancellor, was briefed by Prof Dr Asma on current developments, initiatives taken in facing current challenges and achievements of the university in the first and second quarter of this year.
Asma also touched on USM’s performance prospects as an apex university in Malaysia and the role it could play in helping Perlis to develop, especially its Chuping Valley Industrial Area.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin signed the letters of reappointment of Tan Sri Razali Ismail and Tan Sri Dr M. Jegathesan as USM pro-chancellors for another two-year term, while Asma presented the ruler with a fig plant.
The university is carrying out a fig tissue culture project to produce high-quality plants for commercial purpose in Malaysia. – BERNAMA
