KUALA LUMPUR – The president of the International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM), Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim today launched the Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL) Speaker’s Corner at the university, here today.
He said the Speaker’s Corner was set up near the faculty’s cafeteria with the intention of encouraging the university students and staff to give speeches on any matter concerning studies related to their faculty, the law, justice and so on.
“Of course, we acknowledge that the Speaker’s corner originated from the West but it has become one of the practices of democracy, thus we accept it openly.
“But we wish to remind that this platform should be used carefully, responsibly and with the understanding that not everything that is available in this country or in the world is free from regulations,” he told reporters after the launch here.
Also present were AIKOL Dean Prof Hunud Abia Kadouf and IIUM Rector Prof Datuk Dr Zaleha Kamaruddin.
Rais said the speakers must also respect the law on defamation, sedition or matters pertaining to national security.
“If everyone is using the platform (Speaker’s Corner) with care, I am certain that whatever is provided by the university administration will give the best benefit,” he added. – BERNAMA
