KUALA LUMPUR: The Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tuanku Hajah Haminah, received an honorary Doctorate in Social Works from the Management and Science University in conjunction with its 19th convocation.
Tuanku Hajah Haminah, who is the MSU Chancellor, received the award from MSU President Prof Tan Sri Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid, at a special convocation held at Dewan Seri Maharaja of Istana Negara.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, also attended the convocation.
Others present included MSU Pro-Chancellor Tan Sri Dr Wan Mohd Zahid Mohd Noordin and the MSU board of directors and senior management.
Dr Mohd Shukri said the award recognised Tuanku Hajah Haminah’s efforts in addressing problems affecting the people, especially in social issues related to children, women and the elderly.
“She is aware of developments related to the lives of children who are the nation’s legacy. As such, on her own initiative, she set up the Sultanah Hajah Haminah Orphanage Foundation, a welfare-based body aimed at caring for less fortunate children, especially orphans,” he said.
Dr Mohd Shukri said the Raja Permaisuri also fostered ties with the people via charitable activities.
The Raja Permaisuri Agong is the patron of the Kedah Muslim Women’s Welfare Board, Kedah Girl Guides Association, Kedah Single Mothers Association and the Women’s Institute, a role she plays to provide encouragement for charitable activities. — Bernama
