KUALA LUMPUR: The Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah Tahfiz Centre in Datuk Keramat, which was destroyed in a morning blaze today killing at least 23 students and 2 wardens, did not have a fire exit, said Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department Deputy director Abu Obaidat Mohamad Saithalimat.

He said they are investigating whether the school had obtained a license to operate.

Meanwhile, Abu Obaidat said the fire is believed to have started at the main door of the school, and all the charred remains of victims were found elsewhere in the building.

“All bodies were found (near the) windows at the left and right, on the second floor.

‘But tragically, all the windows had (grilles on them),” Abu Obaidat said.

He added that most of the bodies were piled on top of each other.

The final death count is still being determined, but the Department suspects that a short circuit may have triggered the blaze.

All bodies were sent to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

A press conference with the Kuala Lumpur Fire Rescue Department chief is expected soon. -NST
