Proton Holdings Bhd’s joint-venture (JV) with an Indonesian firm to develop the neighboring country’s national car is a baby step towards a bigger success.
Its chairman, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the collaboration is part of the efforts towards realising the Asean car project which was mooted by Malaysia as the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations this year.
“We (Proton) will not venture into this project if we are going to lose money. This project would not only benefit Indonesia, but the Asean region as a whole,” he told reporters after Indonesian president Jokowi Widodo’s visit to Proton headquarters, here, today.
Earlier, Proton signed a memorandum of understanding with PT Adiperkasa Citra Lestari to develop and manufacture Indonesian car.-NST
