KUALA LUMPUR – The proposal to set up the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) at the state level will be decided later, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim.
He said the proposal was still at the study stage and, at present, Nadma sent the agency’s senior officers to provide assistance to the Civil Defence secretariat to states affected by disasters.
“The approach is an effective method and the disaster management machinery can be handled successfully,” he said during the question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat sitting here today.
He said the Cabinet ministers were satisfied with the flood disaster management and assistance from the other rescue teams such as APM, fire and rescue, police, armed forces, Welfare Department in handling over 100,00 flood victims in the flood operations recemtly.
Hence, he added, the question of duplicating roles with the Special Malaysia Disaster Existence and Rescue Team (SMART) in disaster operations or in the fllod relief centres did not arise. – BERNAMA
