PRINCE’S heartbroken ex-wife Mayte Garcia has spoken out following the singer’s death.
The 57-year-old singer was found dead at his Paisley Park estate on Wednesday morning and Mayte – who he married in 1996 – said the iconic star was her “everything”.
In a statement made through her manager Gladys Gonzalez she shared: “I can’t even think of the words of what I’m feeling.”
She added to People magazine: “This man was my everything, we had a family. I am beyond deeply saddened and devastated.”
Prince and Mayte were devastated when their only child, Boy Gregory, was born with rare genetic disorder Pfeiffer syndrome and died just a week after he was born, and the singer/songwriter is taking comfort from the fact her former spouse – who she divorced in 2000 – is now with their offspring.
She added to People magazine: “I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He’s with our son now.”
In pictures taken shortly after the sad news emerged, the singer’s former backing dancer looked strained and tearful as she chatted on the phone in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, opening up about their marriage last year, she shared: “To lose two babies is really scary… it really caught on me emotionally, physically, everything. It took me at least 15 years to get over it and still, to this day, I miss my son.
“I believe a child dying between a couple either makes you stronger or it doesn’t. For me, it was very, very hard to move forward and for us as a couple I think it probably broke us.â€
After she and Prince separated in 2000 she began a two-year relationship with Mötley Crüe rocker Tommy Lee. Three years ago she adopted her daughter, Gia, now four-and-a-half.
An official cause of death for the singer has not yet been revealed, but he was taken to hospital with flu symptoms earlier this month. – Daily Mirror
