KUALA LUMPUR – Melaka United snatched the lead in the Premier League after edging DRB-Hicom FC 1-0 at Stadium Proton, Tanjung Malim, Perak, last night.
The winning goal was a penalty converted by Ilija Spasojevic in the 89th minute.
This fifth victory by Melaka United saw the squad coached by Mat Zan Mat Aris collect 18 points after eight matches.
Although they share the same points with Kuala Lumpur, Melaka United have a superior goal difference.
Kuala Lumpur dropped to second place after playing to a 2-2 draw against Perlis at Stadium Tunku Syed Putra in Kangar.
Kuala Lumpur’s goals were scored by Mohamad Rashid Mohamed Aya in the 7th minute and Anselmo Arruda Da Silva in the 65th minute while Perlis’ came via Mohamadou Sumareh (11th) and Vincent Kayne (67th).
At the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council Stadium in Johor Baharu, Johor Darul Ta’zim II (JDT II) beat Negeri Sembilan 3-2 despites being two goals down.
Negeri Sembilan led by a comfortable 2-0 margin with Andrew Nabbout scoring in the 2nd and 20th minutes (20th minute goal from a penalty).
The Southern Tigers did not lose hope and succeeded in scoring three goals through Mohd Afiq Fazail (45th, captain Shahril Ishak (64th) and Zaquan Adha Abdul Radzak (89th).
Meanwhile, PKNS FC edged Sabah 2-1 at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka.
The home team led through goals by Gabriel Miguel Guerra in the 14th and 83rd minutes before Prince Tochukwu Nnake reduced the deficit for Sabah in the 86th minute.
Also collecting three full points were Kuantan FA who beat Malaysian Armed Forces 2-1 at the Tun Abdul Razak Stadium in Jengka, Pahang.
ATM had taken in the lead through Mohd Azim Faris’ goal in the 17th minute before Abdul Malik Mat Ariff emerged as the hero of ‘The Seagulls’ with goals in the 24th and 40th minutes.
Meanwhile, Sime Darby FC and UiTM FC played to a goalless draw at the Selayang Municipal Stadium.
